When Motherhood Means Tragedy

Mother's Day is meant to be a time of joy and appreciation. But
for caring animal advocates like you, it may also serve as a reminder
to help the countless canine mothers cruelly trapped and
exploited in "puppy mills."

Puppy mills are dog-breeding facilities operated purely for profit. In
these brutal facilities, certain female dogs are chosen as
"breeding stock" and are repeatedly impregnated from a
very young age -- forced to give birth to litter after litter -- until
they are no longer fertile.

These poor animals typically live in small, filthy cages and receive
no medical treatment or human attention of any kind. And perhaps most
heartbreaking of all is their fate once motherhood ceases to be an
option for them -- most are killed or abandoned.

Help Fund Puppy-Mill Rescues

American Humane stands firmly against puppy mills' inhumane
practices and is taking steps to help the voiceless victims of these
horrific operations. For example, in October 2007, our Red Star Animal
Emergency ServicesTM (http://www.americanhumane.org/site/R?i=ZzBoY7eA-SJr7Nm2Ceth3A.. ) team joined forces with other local and
national animal welfare organizations in Buxton, Maine, to rescue more
than 250 dogs from a puppy mill.

Your donation will help fund future rescues, which are priceless in
terms of the animals saved, yet very expensive from a practical
standpoint. http://www.americanhumane.org/site/R?i=PC6j-5KGv7dyiBw3Z7IUNQ..

Our deployment to Maine in the American Humane
"Rescue Rig," an 82-foot-long tractor trailer that
contains a mobile veterinary clinic, cost more than $60,000.

A Mother's Day gift from you will truly make a difference. With
your help, we will be ready to respond in the future on behalf of
other puppy-mill "moms" who deserve a better life.

Funny how the way people view humans they really view all of humanity. If you would treat an animal this way then you would treat a human this way.

It is so foundational that people learn to be compassionate to those that are really relying on our care.

There has been some legislation in places like LosAngeles that all dogs have to be fixed or licensed as breeders and then pay some users fee's. but then what do they do to those that do it under the table?

Maybe we should as for legislation "truth in puppying" how old the mother was, how many previous pregnancies etc.
