PLEASE do not change topics in the middle of a thread. I moved this from the other thread so as not to confuse. Here is how it went down: ====================================== ibebusynow8 post s 18-Mar-2008 5:55 PM So...ladies, in two weeks I will head up to Alaska to train with LiZa...I am very excited, but that does bring up a question I am hoping for some feedback on. I have been apprenticing with my boyfriend for about a year...as a traditional tattoo artist. The name of his shop is Damaged Ink. Now I must admit that he gets a lot of requests for permanent cosmetics...he has done some work on a few of his long term clients...without the benifit of any numbing stuff... But what I want to know is this...If the shop is named Damaged Ink Tattoos...does it sound too negative???...really there isnt much I can do about the name of his shop...but if I am working there...what am I to do for business cards for myself? He is a great artist...clients come from clear across the country for him to do work, and me working out of this shop will be a huge blessing...but...I mean really...would you go to a shop called Damaged Ink to get your permanent make-up done? Any suggestions? I need to get things rolling so when I get back from training with LiZa I have business cards etc. I feel very confident in my ability to tattoo already...just want to get training through a certified trainer...Any and all feedback would be appreciated...how would you ladies handle this whole name thing? I appreciate your input..wish I had been able to go to the convention as well...bummer..hopefully they will all be back on board real soon...and we can hear all the juicy details...lol Tina =========================================== McTat 4 post s 18-Mar-2008 6:38 PM Have you considered creating a separate business name and operate out of the same shop? I work out of a dental office and am a completeley separate business entity than when I am working dentistry. I had business cards and brochures made with all of my own info and simply put our office address, I use a separate phone . I have a static cling for the window with my logo and I am able to market through the practice. It sounds as if you have already decided that his shop name is not right for you but the location and reputation are. It sounds like you will have built in clients and referrals. Good luck to you. Just as your boyfriend has his business name and recognition established, so must you, independently of him. It is not a question of whether Damaged Ink is a good name or not. It is- for him. But it is not YOUR good name. As a new business, you are about to put a lot of time effort and energy into building your reputation, and that reputation has to be associated with a business name, which could be anything from your own real name "Beatrice's Beautiful Permanent Makeup" to, as in my case, "Facecrafter Permanent Cosmetics" The important things are: 1. to be clear about what you do by including permanent makeup or permanent cosmetics in that name, wherever it appears on listings, business cards, window decals, etc. 2. to be sure not to infringe on someone else's already established permanent cosmetics name. (This may take some research.) Besides being subject to litigation, you stand a chance of being really ostracized by your fellow artists if you try to steal or to use a name easily confused with someone else's. You are about to invest a lot of time, effort and energy into building up a good name for yourself- make it your own, and you can keep it forever. Use your boyfriend's business name and you stand the chance of losing that name if you lose him, divorce him or otherwise have your relationship compromised. You may decide not to work with him for other reasons in the future. Plan for it. You won't regret it in any case. ---------- Be well and beautiful, :)udy judy@facecrafter.com www.facecrafter.com 941-351-1333 RevitaLash! Get Longer-Thicker-Darker Lashes. And, fill in Brows too!

Thanks for moving the post. I originally thought I was starting a new thread...and I am so new at this...I did it wrong. Soo..yes, I have thought about having my own name, but I am not sure what to call it! That was very helpful information. Especially about how you work cooperatively within another established business. Also, that was a very good point about "what if" stuff goes down. Excellent point! I welcome any other input...I will spend the next day or two simmering some of these ideas in my brain. I appreciate all of you who have gone before me on this...Thanks...Tina
